Safeguarding data and protecting privacy is a priority for the disability data asset.
The Australian Bureau of Statistics and Australian Institute of Health and Welfare are making sure that there are strong privacy and data protections in place. They were chosen for this role because they already manage many important Australian Government data collections.
They will be using many processes to protect privacy, keep data secure and meet legal requirements for the disability data asset. These include:
- legislative protections
- privacy protections
- security framework and accreditation and
- data handling practices.
Governments and the disability community are working together to develop the disability asset and decide how the asset can be used. Safeguards will be put in place to ensure the data asset is used to help improve outcomes for people with disability.
How will my privacy and data be protected?
The Australian Government considers it critical that all data, including for the National Disability Data Asset is safeguarded and the privacy of individuals is protected.
The National Disability Data Asset will be protected by secure systems to ensure only authorised people will be able to access data.
We are prioritising the protection of privacy and data security at all stages. This includes designing governance, secure systems and processes to securely deliver the National Disability Data Asset. Privacy and ethical oversight arrangements will be in place prior to data being shared. All data will be handled in accordance with the Commonwealth Privacy Act 1988.
The National Disability Data Asset will not be used to identify people. This means it will not be used to make decisions about an individual’s access to government funding.
Information used for analysis is de-identified. This means personal information (including names and addresses) will be removed. Safeguards, processes and access controls will make sure individuals are no longer able to be identified.
